CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE

0230 Hours, Thursday, October 29, 1942

German Safe House, Stockholm

Eve had remained motionless since the guards left. Emily called out to wake her, but Eve was unresponsive. Three long hours after being dumped in the cell, Eve finally began to stir. When she opened her eyes, Emily heard her say one word: ether. She sat up and looked around at her surroundings. When her gaze fell on Emily, her look became hard.

“Oh God,” Eve muttered.

“Hello, Eve.”

Eve brushed the hair from her face. “Emily Bright,” Eve said in a scornful voice.

Emily let that one go.

Eve shifted on her mattress and wrapped her arms around her knees. “When I think about it, it makes sense they would send you to look for my husband. You knew each other well.”

“We did. That’s why it was hard for me to believe that he would conspire with the Germans. Was it hard for you to believe that he would do that?”

Eve began to rock back and forth. “Why have the Germans taken you?” she asked, ignoring Emily’s question.

“They didn’t like me snooping around. Maybe they think I might know something about your husband.”

“Do they know you work for the British?”

Emily paused. They don’t. At least not yet. But Eve does. “They have their suspicions.”

“Oh. That’s interesting,” Eve said finishing off with a crooked smile.

“But the more intriguing question is: Why have they taken you?”

“I don’t know. Maybe because I am the daughter of Benjamin Andersson.”

“Ahh, you’re their leverage. And that comes into play when you’re trying to do a deal with someone. Your father and the Germans are dealing. For what, Eve?”

Eve didn’t respond, but she stopped rocking and stared at Emily.

Footsteps from above drew their attention. When the rush of water from a flushing toilet above them sounded, they both looked at each other.

“Has your father told his Nazi friends that you are Gunnar’s loving wife?”

“Of course not.” Eve struggled to her feet. Unsteady, she braced herself by gripping the bars of the cell door. “He wouldn’t do that … put me in danger.”

“Well, here you are. In danger.” Emily decided she would hold off pressing Eve on what she knew about the Germans. She was more curious about other matters. “How did you get out of England?”

“I traveled with Conor Thorn. I am helping him find Gunnar.”

Emily scoffed. “Can’t be much help behind bars.” Eve started to open her mouth, but Emily cut her off. “Do you know if Conor has made any progress?”

“None that I know of. He’s more arrogant than effective.” Eve squinted at Emily. “What happened to your face? It looks bruised. Did someone—”

“Hit me? Yes. Maybe you’ve run into him yourself. He wears an eye patch.”

“Yes. The bastard with the ether.”

Emily ran her hand down the side of her face. Her cheekbone was still tender, as was the memory of being knocked unconscious. “Speaking of the Nazis. You would think that knowing you’re Gunner’s wife would be valuable information. Wouldn’t you say?”

Eve leaned against the cell door and made no attempt to respond; a look of concern overcame her face as Emily spoke.
